The Mom Behind the Brand
1. Introduce yourself and your business.
My name is Lisa McGuigan and I am a Senior Consultant for Beautycounter.
2. What need does your business fill in the marketplace and who would benefit most by using your products?
There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today and many don’t have safety data. Beautycounter is a disruptive brand committed to health and safety standards that goes well beyond what is required by U.S. law. We have banned more than 1,500 questionable or harmful ingredients through our “Never List” – all while ensuring our products perform and that they are just as indulgent as any other luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market. Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.
As a lifelong product lover I struggled to find safer, non-toxic beauty options that would not require a compromise on quality and performance. My search led me to Beautycounter, and this business has been a small part of my journey to switch to safer.
3. What were you doing prior to launching your Beautycounter business?
I worked in fashion and retail marketing which is where I developed my passion for product. I am fortunate to have been with some amazing companies; Neiman Marcus, Escada, and St. John Knits to name a few. Spending so much time in the luxury world spoiled me, and I have literally tried almost every product out there! Beautiful packaging and branding attracted me to Beautycounter initially, but the mission and performance hooked me.
4. Describe the moment when you decided to dive in headfirst and launch your business. What was the final factor that motivated you to take that leap of faith?
I was pumping in my office, literally! Stress, coffee and fear were fueling my days, and I was haunted by the feeling that there had to be a better way. Sadly (and in my experience), corporate America is not always mom-friendly, and like many moms I was struggling to find a balance. I was failing at work, failing at home and missing out on all the milestones I so desperately wanted to be a part of. My heart was yearning to be home with my son and I knew that if I bet on my family I couldn’t lose. There will always be another job, but there will never be another first year of motherhood.
5. What has been the hardest thing about running your own business?
Time! Being a full-time mom is a big job and I take it seriously. I want to be present and engaged every day which requires me to get creative with my schedule. Luckily, this is very much a nooks and crannies business and I can find little pockets of time each day during naps, walks, whenever. The beauty of Beautycounter is that you get what you give. This can be a fun, side-gig where you enjoy discounted product and earn a little spending money, or it can be a lucrative career with limitless earning potential. I would say that I am somewhere in the middle.
6. What has been the most rewarding part of running your own business?
Absolutely sharing our mission and helping the people I love switch to safer products.
7. What’s one piece of advice you would give to other moms who want to launch their own business?
Be kind, gentle and patient with yourself. It takes time, and it is a slow build. We want it all, and we want it now, but it is a marathon, not a sprint. I tell myself that every single day. Just keep going.
8. Tell us your best tips/advice for balancing motherhood and a business?
Ask for help and accept the help that is offered. I have a wonderful community of mom friends, but I also rely on my husband who is incredibly supportive. It takes a village!
9. What does your average day look like?
I have a 16-month-old little boy so I am basically running around like a crazy person trying to keep up. I love meeting new clients and doing in person consultations, but that has gotten tricky now that Cooper walks/runs! It’s a balance – beauty, baby and lots and lots of coffee.
10. What do your kids think you do for a living?
Milkmaid, but we are working on that!
11. When did it first hit you that you were an entrepreneur?
It hasn’t! Working for myself is still very new, but I am growing and learning every moment of every day and reality is setting in. There is no safety net, but my wins are my own and I like that.
12. What does success look like to you?
Success is time with my family and the freedom to work when I want and how I want. I have great days and mediocre ones, but overall I am empowered by the opportunity to succeed with a brand and business I am truly passionate about. The more time I get with my son the richer and more successful I feel.
13. What’s next for you and your Beautycounter business?
Expanding my network and meeting other women who are passionate about our mission and want to share it with others.
14. How can we support you and your business?
There are a few ways and great question! First and foremost, become a client and make safer choices when you purchase products. I am still not much of a label reader (who has the time!), but when I use Beautycounter I know I am using safe products that also perform. Second, host a social. Hosts get their friends and family together to learn about Beautycounter, and in return they receive free products and products at 50% off. Lastly, join the mission and become a consultant. There are consultants who work four hours a week and those that work forty and earn a full-time income. There is a place for everyone at Beautycounter.

15. Any special offers/announcements you want to share with our Tribe readers?
I am excited to offer Tribe readers FREE Band of Beauty Membership ($29 value) with their purchase of $100 or more. Band of Beauty members enjoy free shipping, a welcome gift for joining (for June it is our amazing Lip Conditioner) and a very lucrative cash rewards program.
For the months of June and July, I am also offering new consultants reimbursement on business kits ($85 value) with the purchase of one of our starter kits. Plus, I will personally coach and support you as you launch your Beautycounter business, and together, we can make the world a better place one lipstick at a time!
